China Retaliates with Tariffs Against United States' Energy, Vehicles, and Equipment
In response to the U.S.'s recent trade war measures against major trading partners like Canada and Mexico, including a 10% tariff on goods from China, Beijing announced new tariffs on American energy imports, vehicles, and equipment. The levies are in retaliation to unilateral tariff hike by Washington over the weekend and follow the U.S.'s justification that the tariffs aimed to punish countries for failing to halt illegal immigration into America.
Just hours after the U.S.'s tariffs came into effect, China said it would impose a 15% duty on coal and LNG imports from the United States. On Tuesday, they revealed new duties of 10% on crude oil, agricultural machinery, and big-engined vehicles, along with pickup trucks.
The Chinese government has stated that these measures were taken in response to Washington's malicious levies and that it will file a complaint against them with the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Alongside their tariffs, China announced an investigation into American tech giant Google. Additionally, they added U.S. fashion group PVH Corp., which owns Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein, as well as biotech company Illumina to a list of unreliable entities.
The Chinese government has also unveiled fresh export controls on rare metals and chemicals used in industrial appliances.
Trump has said that his tariffs aimed to punish countries for failing to halt the flow of illegal migrants into the U.S. However, he stated on Monday that he planned to call Chinese President Xi Jinping within the next 24 hours.
