BBC to Trump Sorry for edit, but defamation claim baseless

BBC has apologized for editing Donald Trump's speech in a misleading way that gave the impression he had urged violent action before his supporters attacked the Capitol on January 6th, 2021. This led to the resignation of BBC Director-General Tim Davie and Head of News Fran Unsworth. The video edit triggered a firestorm, with President Donald Trump's lawyers threatening to sue for $1 billion.
BBC Chairman Samir Shah sent a personal letter apologizing to President Trump for the video clip editing, stating that while they understand Mr. Trump strongly disagrees, there is no basis for a defamation claim. BBC lawyers wrote to Trump's legal team in response.
The controversy continues to swirl around the Panorama documentary on Donald Trump aired in October 2024. The BBC is now investigating another edit of Trump's speech from the day of the Capitol riots.
