All 67 Victims of Devastating Midair Collision Near DC Recovered

The investigation into last week's tragic midair collision near Washington D.C. continues to unfold as authorities announce that all 67 victims from both the American Airlines flight and the Army helicopter have been recovered.

The recovery effort was a complex and challenging process, with crews working in choppy conditions to raise large pieces of the jetliner from the Potomac River. On Monday, significant portions of the plane were successfully raised, including the right wing, center fuselage, forward cabin, cockpit, tail cone, and rudder, as well as one of the engines.

While all but one victim has been identified, officials are working to positively identify the remaining set of remains through DNA analysis. The chief medical examiner is leading the effort to confirm the identities of the final individuals.

The collision occurred just after 900 pm on Wednesday night as the American Airlines flight was about to land at Ronald Reagan National Airport. Both aircraft were destroyed, resulting in the loss of all 67 lives on board.

Ongoing Investigation

Federal investigators are working tirelessly to piece together the events that led to this tragic collision. The NTSB is examining new data that could shed light on whether the Army helicopter was above its 200-foot (61-meter) flight ceiling at the time of the crash, as well as investigating why the jet's altitude reading showed it to be at 325 feet (99 meters), plus or minus 25 feet (7.6 meters).

Remembering the Victims

The victims of this devastating collision include 60 passengers and four crew members on board the American Airlines flight, as well as three Army personnel on the helicopter. The plane was carrying figure skaters returning from a competition in Wichita, Kansas.

As officials continue to work through the recovery process, they are remembering the victims and their families. Our hearts are with the victims' families as they navigate this tragic loss, said authorities in a joint statement.

Next Steps

The investigation is expected to take several months to complete, with a preliminary report due within 30 days. Full investigations typically take a year or more, but investigators hope to have a preliminary report sooner.

Recovery efforts are also ongoing, with officials hoping to retrieve the wreckage later this week. This incident marks the deadliest in the US since November 12, 2001, when a jet slammed into a New York City neighborhood just after takeoff, killing all 260 people on board and five on the ground.

Enjoy the little things in life. For one day, you may look back and realize they were the big things. Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.
