Title The Evolution of GBA A Surge in Local and Foreign Tourists
The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) has witnessed a significant surge in tourism, driven by China's visa facilitation measures. According to recent reports, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge handled 25,000 inbound and outbound vehicle trips on Saturday, marking its highest single-day traffic since opening in 2018.
From January 28 to Saturday, the total number of vehicle crossings reached 95,000, a 35.6 percent year-on-year increase. Notably, over 69,000 trips were recorded by vehicles carrying number plates from Hong Kong or Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), representing a 40.4-percent year-on-year rise.
In Hong Kong, visitor arrivals exceeded 680,000 from January 28 to January 31, with 564,000 visitors coming from the Chinese mainland, marking a 4 percent year-on-year increase. The city also witnessed a 16 percent rise in visitors from outside the Chinese mainland.
Macao saw a notable surge in visitor arrivals, reaching 219,000 on January 31, an increase of 50,000 from the previous day, reflecting the impact of the Spring Festival holiday period. The city's hotel occupancy rate has exceeded 90 percent.
Residents in Guangdong Province have also noticed a significant increase in distinctive cars from Hong Kong and Macao, as the influx of visitors from these two SARs surged.
A policy change granting permanent residents and residence permit holders in the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone with a multi-entry permit for unrestricted visits to Macao has led to a notable impact. From January 1 to 31, a total of 16,000 visits were made under this policy.
According to Song Ding, a research fellow at the China Development Institute, the surge in tourism can be attributed to favorable policies rolled out by the central government and regional government since 2024. As a result, we are seeing new breakthroughs for visitor throughput by key infrastructure in the region and a steady increase in mainland visitors to Hong Kong and Macao, he noted.
In Shenzhen, over 57,000 foreign arrivals and departures were recorded between January 28 and 10 am Saturday, representing a 38 percent year-on-year increase. Of these, more than 12,000 visitors took advantage of the visa-free policy, accounting for 40.4 percent of total foreign arrivals.
During the period, Shenzhen border inspection authorities reported over 2.85 million arrivals and departures, up 8.5 percent year on year.
The surge in tourism is expected to continue, driven by favorable policies and the region's economic growth.
