Search Underway for Missing Plane Carrying 10 People in Western Alaska
As of Thursday afternoon, a Bering Air Cessna Caravan carrying 10 people has gone missing while flying across Norton Sound, south of the Arctic Circle. The aircraft departed from Unalakleet to Nome with nine passengers and a pilot on board when contact was lost.
The Disappearance
According to Alaska's Department of Public Safety, the plane took off from Unalakleet at 237 p.m., but officials lost contact with it just over an hour later. The aircraft was approximately 12 miles offshore at the time, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Ongoing Rescue Efforts
Bering Air staff are working diligently to gather details, provide emergency assistance, and launch search and rescue operations. The Nome Volunteer Fire Department has dispatched ground crews to search along the coast from Nome to Topkok. Due to inclement weather conditions, air searches have been temporarily suspended.
