102 Snakes Wrangled from Sydney Backyard
A routine call-out to a residential property in Western Sydney has turned into a record-breaking reptile rescue for the Snake Catchers 1300 team.
After receiving a call from concerned residents about a number of snakes on their property, our team arrived to find an extraordinary 102 snakes – both venomous and non-venomous – wriggling around in various parts of the backyard. It was clear that this was no ordinary snake infestation.
The task at hand was immense, but our team of experienced snake catchers sprang into action. We worked systematically, using specialized techniques to capture each snake individually while minimizing harm to them and ensuring public safety. With a focus on reptile conservation, we carefully identified the species and released those that could be returned to their natural habitats.
The majority of the snakes were brown tree snakes (Boiga irregularis), a non-venomous species known for their invasive behavior in the Pacific Islands. However, there were also several venomous snakes, including tiger snakes (Notechis ater) and brown snakes (Pseudonaja textilis).
The snake wrangling effort took several days to complete. The team worked tirelessly around the clock, even as weather conditions deteriorated due to heavy rainfall. This record-breaking reptile rescue was an unprecedented challenge that required dedication, skill, and a commitment to conservation.
We are proud to share that we successfully rescued all 102 snakes, ensuring their safety and the safety of residents in the area. Our team is now focused on educating the public about how to coexist with these fascinating creatures. We encourage everyone to take precautions when encountering snakes but also appreciate the important role they play in our ecosystem.
The next time you see a snake, remember that it's not just an unwanted visitor – it's a living being with its own unique story and place in nature.
